Walead Beshty’s Fedex’ed boxes are a part of his love affair with the indexical - the clues and signs left behind after the process of creation is finished. The supposedly shatter proof glass boxes are mailed between each exhibition, and the contents of the box is a mystery to even the artist when they’re finally opened at the end of the line. Beshty’s obsession with the trace remains also influences the photography he creates - he has developed a technique he discovered by accident one day when a roll of his unexposed film was taken through the x-ray machine at airport security. Beshty’s work is made by physically changing the location of a material and allowing the journey to take its course.
