Cai Guo Qiang is one of China’s best known contemporary sculptures, having represented China and also curate for the country at the Venice Biennale, in 1999 and 2005 respectively. His work is remarkable for the feeling of spontaneity and aliveness. He has worked with materials such as gunpowder before, which allowed him to break free from the highly rigid artistic traditions of his home country. He’s even arranged day-time fireworks shows - where he’s gone back to the drawing board and redesigned the fireworks to create puffs of beautiful colour in the blue sky.
